Experience Bridge successfully installed in Hasselt’s canal basin

The construction of the Experience Bridge for the City of Hasselt has reached another important milestone. Following its transport from Temse via the Scheldt and Albert Canal, the impressive steel structure was successfully manoeuvred into Hasselt’s canal basin today and installed at its final location along the Blauwe Boulevard.

An engineering feat in the heart of Hasselt

Upon arrival in Hasselt, the bridge was prepared for a carefully coordinated installation operation. The structure was first rotated by 90 degrees before being manoeuvred between the previously constructed bridge piers. It was then carefully lowered onto the bridge abutments.

This complex operation required meticulous preparation, advanced engineering and close collaboration between all parties involved. Measuring 56.19 metres in length, up to 14.45 metres in width and weighing 157.5 tonnes, the installation represented an impressive logistical and technical challenge.

More than a pedestrian and cycling bridge

The new crossing over the canal basin will be much more than a traditional pedestrian and cycling bridge. At its widest point, the bridge measures nearly 14.5 metres, creating space for rest areas, seating and integrated green landscaping.

The bridge will form an important connection between Hasselt’s city centre and the redeveloped canal district. At the same time, it will become an attractive public space where infrastructure, architecture and experience come together.

Final phase of the project

With the successful installation completed, the project has moved one step closer to completion. In the coming months, the bridge will be further secured and finished. The surrounding public space will also be developed further with wide pedestrian and cycling paths as well as additional landscaping.

The bridge will also receive an official name at a later stage. To this end, the City of Hasselt will organise a public naming competition. The official opening of the new connection is scheduled for this autumn.
